The Power of Belief

Writer: Jaime CollinsJaime Collins

Don’t believe every thought you have.

- Wayne Dyer

When you were young, your guardians, your environment, and your society set out to teach you how to live here. That all came with a set of beliefs designed to keep you safe and to teach you how to survive. Ironically, what was born out of loving intentions, taught you self-limiting beliefs. You learned to wear a mask to fit in. You learned how to behave in public. More often than not, you were taught to fit in, not how to be you.

Do you ever stop to think about who you are? What do you believe? Why are you where you are in your life? Do you feel fulfilled?

The fact is, you may have become very accomplished in your life and still have this lingering feeling of being unfilled simply because you learned not to be all of who you are. You shelved away ideas because they didn’t seem possible, subconsciously or consciously.

It’s time to talk about how to make changes in your life to feel more joy and peace - to feel more authentically you, and it starts with YOUR beliefs.

When you start to realize what you want or don’t want in your life, as the creator you are, it’s a beautiful thing!

We often try to simply change the behaviour by doing - by taking action. If that works for you, fantastic! However, what happens to a lot of us, is that we end up failing to change a habit because hardwired existing beliefs in our brain are reinforced by our behaviours over time. Essentially, it’s really hard to change a behaviour or a habit when it’s formed.

Neurons that fire together wire together.

-Donald Hebb (Canadian Psychologist)

Since your behaviours are first shaped by your beliefs,  if you want to change your habits, it’s time to shift your thinking. In fact, change is possible because the brain is always changing! We didn’t always BELIEVE this, but now advances in science and how we currently understand the brain, are proving that this theory is sound.

A great place to start is to get to know yourself better. What do your behaviours TELL you about your beliefs? Become more aware of ‘matter of fact’ statements about the ‘way things are.’  Start to look more closely at your identity, values and beliefs. Are they yours? Or someone else's beliefs?

You will need to unlearn some unhelpful beliefs and start to learn more about yourself. It can be an exciting and equally uncomfortable process. ‘That was just the way it was.’ Try separating the trauma away from the individual that caused it. Even though you may forgive a parent, being that they did the best they knew how at the time, you still need to address the trauma and learn to work through it.

By processing these circumstances, you become more comfortable with yourself, all parts of you. All of these lessons are FOR you, for your highest good and out of that growth, comes understanding.

If knowledge is power, learning is your superpower.

-Jim Kwik

Most of what we learn is fear. Fear of not being good enough, fear of not succeeding, fear for safety etc. Just as we believed in fear, we can shift our perspective to believe something else. Believing in love, believing in yourself, believing in your purpose here.

Your mind is everything, you think what you become.

-Buddha

There truly is no limit to the power of the human mind. We see this time and time again in medical trials. Nocebo effect: causes disease. Placebo effect: cures disease. What do you choose?

The power that made the body, heals the body.

- Dr. Joe Dispenza

Often when you are in a crisis or stuck in trauma, you tend to focus on what you don’t want. What if…. Negative statement. What if I die? What if I fail? What if I make a fool of myself? What if….

What if you made a positive statement instead? What if I went after my dreams and I lived a life beyond my wildest dreams?

Ironically when you are in crisis mode, the breakdown is necessary to break through. It’s almost like your inner Self wants to help your course correct to get back on track to being authentically you.

The issue tends to be that we try believing something different and after a while we say, oh I tried that and it didn’t work! Before something can manifest in your life, it starts as a belief and it needs to pick up momentum. If you have spent years and decades believing in something, it’s going to take a little time for your world to start matching your beliefs.

So instead of changing your habits, you truly need to change your beliefs first. After unlearning, it’s time to visualize!

Wait, not sure what you want? Honestly, that is true for so many people. You have spent so long being what you think you should be for the world that you lost a little bit or all of yourself. Spend some time collecting data on what you like.

“Today, it is my dominant intention to find things I like.”

-Law of Attraction (Abraham, Jerry & Esther Hicks)

  1. Visualize what you want.

  2. Believe - without a doubt, know it already there for you.

  3. The feeling of joy is a magnet for that desire.

It's a skill that gets better and better every time and it’s helpful to breathe mindfully and tap into a deep state of relaxation. I do this every morning and every night before bed for about 15 minutes, sometimes less, sometimes longer.

As your beliefs start to shift, your behaviours will start to shift. Allow the amount of joy you feel to be the measure of success in your life.

What about those self-limiting beliefs that creep up? They will, that’s all part of being human. It’s not bad or good, it's learning and growth, for your highest good. It isn’t about never feeling ‘bad’. It’s about coming back to joy more and more and faster and faster each time.

  1. Notice them. Feel them. Allow them.

  2. Breathe through them.

  3. Release + add a positive thought or mantra.

Here’s an example:

  1. She is so good at her job! I can’t do it like that (no you can’t because you will do it like you!) I have to be an expert to be taken seriously. Someone will have already done that. I don’t need to speak up, it will probably sound stupid. I have bills to pay, that is a pipe dream. The list really does go on and on. You will always find reasons to prove the self-limiting beliefs because they are hard wired and you will seek the ‘confirmation.’

  2. Breathe, allow, release.

  3. I choose a new belief now. I am safe, I am worthy, and I follow my dreams with love. I am divinely guided and supported at all times. Everything is working out for my highest good, out of this situation, I learn with peace and joy.

Visualizing is the creative power of life. Why go through the motions at this one chance to be here as this persona? Get dreaming and have fun, you deserve it!
